Research summary
Optimal treatment of pancreatic neuroendocrine neoplasms (PanNENs) is the Whipple’s procedure, which involves resection of the head of the pancreas, the duodenum and surrounding structures. The portal vein, a large vessel conveying blood to the liver lies just behind the pancreas. A number of patients with pancreatic neuroendocrine neoplasms (PanNENs) will present with portal vein involvement. Though in other types of tumours, resection and reconstruction of the portal vein has proven meaningful, this has not been investigated for PanNENs. If resection of the vein is not considered as an option, resection of tumour is not attempted.
Before assessing the oncological outcomes of the two options, safety parameters of portal vein resection need to be investigated. This study aims to compare surgical complications between patients that received a standard Whipple’s procedure versus those that received portal vein resection as well. Demographic and intraoperative details will be collected. Postoperative outcomes, such as length of hospital stay, need for reoperation, bleeding, stomach function recovery, infections and leaks will be recorded. Data will also be collected regarding survival without evidence of progression of disease. Data will be statistically analysed and results will be reported in relevant professional conferences and published in scientific journals.REC name
