Research summary
To understand the psychosocial care needs and barriers to accessing support for anogenital cancer patients and their caregivers living in England. Interviews will be conducted with patients and caregivers to explore their experiences, emotional, psychological and social challenges, and the support they have or lack, in navigating care in the English healthcare system. These interviews will aim to capture insights into cultural, language, and systemic factors that influence psychosocial well-being. The research also seeks to identify gaps in available services and barriers, such as stigma, isolation, and communication difficulties with healthcare providers. Data from these interviews will be analysed using thematic analysis to identify recurring themes and inform the next phase of the project.
The findings from the interview will then be used to develop a tailored intervention that addresses the identified psychosocial needs of anogenital cancer patients and their caregivers in England. This intervention will aim to improve access to psychological support, enhance patient-caregiver communication, and provide resources that help navigate the healthcare system more effectively. The design of the intervention will involve collaboration with healthcare professionals, patients, and caregivers to ensure it is both culturally sensitive and practical. The focus will be on creating a structured model of support that can be integrated into existing healthcare settings and tested for feasibility and effectiveness in improving patient and caregiver outcomes. The ultimate goal is to enhance experiences for this population through better psychosocial care.
This project is funded by a University of Leicester, Future50 studentship.
