Research summary
Intestinal failure (IF) is a broad term that describes a variety of diseases or injuries to the gut which prevent it from taking in enough food and water. The only way to stop patients suffering from chronic IF from becoming underfed and dehydrated is to give them nutrition through their veins. This treatment is called Home Parenteral Nutrition (HPN). Though life-sustaining, this therapy changes everyday life of patients significantly and impacts on their physical and mental health. This study aims to explore the psychosexual function of patients diagnosed with IF on HPN and to provide an accurate picture of the overall mental and sexual wellbeing of this patient group. Participants will be asked to fill in multiple anonymous questionnaires focusing on their medical conditions as well as psychosexual wellbeing and quality of life (QOL). Participants will also be invited to a second part of the study which will involve interviews exploring participants’ psychosexual quality of life in more detail. Based on the results of this study the way outpatient clinics work could be changed. Our study could also help clinicians to identify patients’ concerns about their psychosexual wellbeing and act to improve patient’s quality of life.
