  • Research summary

The objectives of this study are to increase the scientific precision of a newly developed questionnaire (Preparedness for Employment Scale for Personality Disorder: PES-PD) which will assess the factors that act as enablers and barriers to employment-seeking behaviours in people with personality disorders (PD) or characteristics similar to people with a PD. The study will use internet and postal paper questionnaire packs for data collection and quantitative evaluation of the validity and reliability of the PES-PD.

The study plans to recruit 1000 participants: 500 participants with characteristics consistent with people with a diagnosis of PD (250 participants with PD characteristics who self-identify with having a mental health condition and 250 participants with PD characteristics who do not self-identify with having a mental health condition); and 500 participants without characteristics consistent with people with a diagnosis of PD (250 people with other mental health conditions and 250 people without any mental health conditions).

Members of the general population over the age of 18 who can read and speak in English will be included in this study. People who have taken part in the pilot study, previous EMPOWER focus groups that helped informed the development of the PES-PD, and those who have previously completed a version of the PES-PD will not be able to take part in this study.

Participants will be recruited through mental health services across North East London NHS Foundation Trust (NELFT) and other National Health Service (NHS) Trusts who express an interest in participating (via the NIHR portfolio), the internet, and public places.

    Study timeline:
    Recruitment: 18 months
Psychometric evaluation (validity and reliability analysis): 7 months
    Overall study length: 25 months
