  • Research summary

Our aim for this research programme is to gain insight into patient perceptions on their treatment and the wider psychological impact of their treatment visits for macular degeneration. We hope to investigate the issues of importance to patients around their treatment regimes and gain an understanding of the stress and impact on psychological well-being of patients caused by intravitreal injection therapy. The study will consist of two main arms.
Firstly we will be collecting survey data on pertinent issues of patient opinion regarding such issues as their preferred management strategies, ease of attendance, modes of attendance, difficulties raised by repeated attendance, issues related to dependence on carers, well-being implications for the carers, level of information and awareness of condition. This survey will be created by the team after literature review, and discussed with patients/carers in a PPI group to ensure relevance.

Secondly, and concurrently, we will study a range of psychological factors that may impact upon patients, using established, validated questionnaires, spanning issues such as stress, pain and discomfort, energy and fatigue, anxiety, dependence on carers and personal relationships. Final choice of questionnaires will be based on advice from the PPI group.
