Research summary
Between 20-40% of people with end-stage renal disease who are receiving haemodialysis experience moderate to severe pruritis (itching). Previous research has associated pruritis with increases in depression, poor sleep, reduced quality of life and early death. Pruritis can be measured using a range of questionnaires which ask the patient to consider their symptoms and how pruritis is affecting their life, however how these questionnaires relate to more general measures of health-related quality of life (HRQoL) is not known. This study will ask 500 people on haemodialysis to complete three pruritus questionnaires and the most commonly used quality of life questionnaire EQ5D when they routinely attend for their treatment on the dialysis unit. Half way through the data collection we will analyse the data obtained to make sure we are getting a suitable range of both pruritus and HRQoL. The data will be used to measure the relationship between the two which researchers can use to evaluate how uraemic pruritus is affecting HRQoL.
