Research summary
There is evidence that there is an unmet need for prompt advice on and provision of contraception immediately following childbirth. This project will examine the views of women receiving midwifery care, midwives, and Heads of Midwifery concerning the feasibility and acceptability of midwives providing contraceptive advice, and where appropriate prescribing and fitting contraceptive for treatment, to women in their care. It will be carried out in acute hospital trusts in the East of England region. The project does not involve any actual change of practice but is exploring views and opinions on this a possible practice change. All women experiencing uncomplicated births will be asked to complete a very short survey (5-6 questions), once, during their pregnancy or in the period of postpartum care. Women will be asked to give contact details on the survey, if they are interested in being interviewed on the topic. These women will be interviewed once, for about 30-60 minutes, by telephone, at a time of their convenience in the weeks after giving birth. This will be the full extent of participation in the study.
A small sample of midwives and Heads of Midwifery in the units will be interviewed once , in person or by telephone, to learn their views on the feasibility of the provision of contraceptive advice and methods, in their unit.REC name
