Research summary
Around 5 million people in the UK have some degree of incontinence, with over two million people seeking help from the NHS each year. Research has shown that people would prefer to have a wider choice of products to manage their incontinence than is generally available through their continence service. The products provided by continence service do not reflect the range of options available to patients, do not appear to offer best value, do not best serve patients’ requirements and do not offer choice to patients and their carers.
Not enough is known about patients’ opinions of product provision and the impact it has on their lives, or on how they would like to see the service improved, or on the financial impact of providing greater choice.
In this study, we are seeking views from patients (or carers) and staff on the current provision of continence products and a proposed new service that will provide a wider range of products. These views will help to inform the development of the new service, to understand what is important to this group of patients and to direct future research.
We are also seeking to access anonymous patient data from an existing NHS database to model the potential impact on costs that a change in continence service provision might have.
