Research summary
The Prospective Outcome Evaluation of Trauma (POET) study is designed to identify clinically significant predictors of adverse outcomes that may develop during the acute phases of care in trauma patients and how this may impact on long term recovery. These predictors may include patient factors such as age or gender, injury characteristics such as injury type and severity or other mechanisms and pathways such as the way in which inflammation and coagulation is activated immediately following major trauma. Adverse outcomes may be defined as acute, such as mortality, organ failure or the development of infection. Longer term outcomes include physical, psychological, emotional and quality of life outcomes.
All trauma patients who are admitted for 48 hours or more will be invited to participate in the study. Data will be gathered from usual care documentation and hospital care record system to identify predictive factors and acute outcomes. Patient reported outcome will be measured prior to discharge and again at 4-6 and 12 months post discharge to determine prospective recovery following injury.
