Research summary
The AURAH 2 study will aim to provide longitudinal data on HIV transmission risk in a group of HIV negative men who have sex with men (MSM) and use the AURAH study’s cross-sectional questionnaires as baseline data. 1000 HIV negative MSM will be recruited to the study and asked to complete a baseline questionnaire on paper and then online risk assessment questions every 3-4 months over a 3 year period. Annual, more extensive questions will also be requested via the secure website. At the end of the 3 year study period, the participants' HIV test results will be extracted and linked to their questionnaire and follow-up responses to look at predictors of new infections.
It is important to study longitudinally the incidence and predictors of new infections among groups at particular risk of HIV infection, and to assess changes over time of the risk behaviour within individuals.
The longitudinal component of this study will be highly relevant to HIV prevention efforts among MSM, and help to inform national policies aimed at reducing HIV incidence in the UK and to increase HIV testing in the UK.REC name
