Research summary
Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA) is a long-term chronic autoimmune disease that causes pain, disability, inflammation, and has a prevalence of about 1% worldwide. There is a high rate of co-morbidity (30%) with depression. Concurrent depression associates with poorer treatment responses, higher pain levels, greater disability and also mortality.
It is currently not known how treatments for rheumatoid arthritis impact on mental health outcomes. A recent systematic review done by our group highlighted the information gap in this field.
This study has a primary aim of comparing changes in mood in patients with rheumatoid arthritis starting or continuing different therapeutic strategies. The study will utilise a novel data collection approach, capturing information using remote assessments through smart phone, wearable technologies, and home blood monitoring for inflammation markers.
The study will collect information with varying intensity (sometimes multiple time points in a single day) for 3 months. In addition to addressing an important question around mental health, the study will provide important insights into this approach to data collection in rheumatoid arthritis.
