Data collection arrangements
Anaemia is an almost inevitable consequence of progressive chronic kidney disease (CKD). All CKD patients with a haemoglobin level below 110 g/L should be considered for therapy with erythropoiesis stimulating agents (ESAs) after other causes of anaemia have been excluded.
The aim of this project is to create a pre-clinical, proof-of-concept, prototype of a web-based electronic register of the renal anaemia outpatients within the Northern Health and Social Care Trust who are being treated with erythropoiesis stimulating agents (ESAs).
ESA therapy is required on an on-going basis and is generally safe, but serious adverse events have been reported and regular monitoring of blood pressure and haemoglobin levels is an important aspect of renal anaemia care.
The objective is to develop software that will facilitate the safe and effective treatment with ESAs of outpatients with renal anaemia. Effective management of renal anaemia may significantly reduce the dose of ESA required to optimise haemoglobin levels and should also increase patient safety.
The following categories of data will be collected: haematology results; biochemistry results and pharmaceutical products. All data will be anonymised and stored in an encrypted format on a secure server attached to the local HSC computer network.
Research programme
The population base (approximately 115 patients) will be those outpatients treated at Antrim Area Hospital Renal Unit for symptomatic anaemia of chronic kidney disease and who are pre-dialysis.
