Research summary
The aim of this study it to design and evaluate a diary in which cancer patients will record side effects and experiences of cancer treatment. The diary will capture information on the timing, severity, and impact on daily living of side effects as well as any supportive treatment required. There is space to record medication including regular (non-cancer related) and cancer-related medication, and a section for making notes before and after clinic consultations. Diary entries will be shared with the patient's cancer doctor at each clinic appointment. It is hoped that the use of a diary will improve the quality of information collected on side effects and reduce time spent on collecting this information in clinic, thus freeing up time for discussion about wider issues such as the psychosocial impact of cancer/cancer treatment. In turn, these gains may translate into improvements in care delivered and the overall patient experience. The diary will be evaluated in a randomised population of cancer patients undergoing routine cancer therapy. Measurement tools will include patient questionnaires completed before any treatment and during treatment, including a separate quality of life questionnaire, and an evaluation of side effect and medication data recorded in patient case notes using a quantitative scoring tool.
