  • Research summary

    The aim is to explore if we can successfully use the 'Patient Dignity Question' (PDQ) in an Academic Palliative Care Unit, within a University Hospital Trust.

    The 'PDQ' is a single, open-ended question that healthcare professionals can ask to patients receiving palliative care. It aims to discover the things that matter the most to the patients. The question 'What do we need to know about you as a person to take the best care of you that we can?' is asked to patients, and their responses are written onto a document, which is placed into medical and nursing notes.
    The PDQ aims to gain a greater understanding of the patient, for clinical staff. Research shows it can help shape the views that healthcare staff have of the individual they're caring for, which in turn can promote 'person-centered' care.

    This study will look at: whether enough participants will consent to the study and take part in the PDQ; whether patients and staff members are able to complete the associated study questionnaires; and evaluate the procedures used; e.g. how much time the PDQ requires, the final number of participants

    Specific study objectives are to:
    1) Use the PDQ with a sample of 8 patients admitted to the Academic Palliative Care Unit;
    2) Explore patient’s and healthcare professional's views on the use of the PDQ;
    3) Produce a final report on the feasibility of engaging the PDQ, including;
    i. An abstract for submission to conference;
    ii. A paper for submission to an academic journal.
