Research summary
This project seeks to explore the views of health and medical professionals and parents about the effects of the Singing Medicine programme offered to children with long-term medical and health needs at Birmingham Children’s Hospital. Specifically it aims to illuminate the promotion of children’s well-being, right to make choices and engage in playful activities in restricted environments through music and singing. Singing Medicine is an award-winning project (Outstanding contribution to the field of arts and health, Royal Society for Public Health 2011) that has been delivered weekly, every Friday, to wards at Birmingham Children’s Hospital since November 2004. The project brings all the benefits of play through singing to children in hospital. Many children involved in the activities experience long-term care in the Hospital due to the nature and severity of their illness and may stay in hospital for months and sometimes years. \n\nIt is hoped that up to 10 parents and 10 health professionals will participate in semi-structured interviews. Interviews will be recorded and transcribed, stored on password protected computers in locked offices. Participants will retain the right to informed consent, right to withdraw and anonymity. Data will be stored for five years in line with University policy.
