Research summary
The study aims to investigate barriers and facilitators to exercise in patients within a secure psychiatric hospital. The research will involve semi-structured interviews with patients at St Andrews Healthcare Northampton. Accelerometer data will be collected from patients in addition to questionnaire and interview data to gain an insight into activity and sedentary behaviour levels within the hospital. Following these studies, an intervention aiming to target staff behaviour and aim to promote need supportive behaviours to support patients with exercise sessions on and off ward will be implemented. By providing staff with the knowledge and ways in which they can offer supportive behaviours regarding exercise, patients exercise levels may naturally increase.
