Research summary
Cancer clinical trials designed to test novel cancer therapies, progress the science of cancer and develop new and advanced treatments are essential to improve outcomes for patients with cancer. However, racial and ethnic inequities exist in cancer clinical trial participation. Low recruitment across ethnically diverse communities contributes to health inequalities further disproportionately affecting these groups. Published research around this subject area is predominantly carried out in the United States and broadly covers physician, patient and system related barriers. It does not examine the intersectionality and heterogeneity amongst ethnic groups within the UK. The aim is to explore how faith, spirituality and cultural norms contribute to perceptions of breast cancer and participation in clinical trials for women who are of Muslim faith. Understanding these fundamentals will allow development of a co-design, faith-based recruitment intervention which is engaging, accessible and meaningful for this group of patients.
The study will adopt a mixed methods approach involving semi-structured interviews, on-line survey and participatory world cafe style workshops. Muslim women, with a diagnosis of breast cancer will be invited to take part in semi-structured interviews and subsequent workshops. Immediate family member / carer will also be invited to take part. Health care professionals working in breast oncology will be invited to participate in an online survey and subsequent workshops. Interviews will be carried out in a place of the participants choice i.e., home, private space i.e., community centre, or virtually. Workshops will be face to face at a venue that is convenient for participants; this may be at a local café, community centre or religious setting. The research is part of an NHS / Charity funded PhD and is affiliated with the Manchester Biomedical Research Centre. Recruitment, data analysis and development of the intervention is expected to take approximately 12 months from the start.REC name
