  • Research summary

Patients with kidney failure undergoing haemodialysis often report a poor quality of life (QoL) and some identify that improving QoL has a higher priority for them than improvements in long term survival. Emerging research suggests that regular collection of Patient Reported Outcome Measures (PROMs) in patients with long-term conditions may reduce hospital admissions and improve patient QoL. Despite this, QoL data in the form of PROMs have not been accurately developed or introduced into routine clinical care for patients receiving haemodialysis. Carefully designed studies to maximise the potential of PROMs to optimise QoL for patients on long-term haemodialysis are needed.
This project will use qualitative methods, semi-structured interviews and focus groups, to explore the experiences and perceptions of patients undergoing haemodialysis and of clinicians within the multi-disciplinary team caring for these patients.
Patients who are established on haemodialysis and are being treated within hospital and satellite dialysis units will be invited to participate in semi structured interviews to explore their views on the use of selected validated PROMs for routine monitoring of their health status; the optimal timing/frequency of PROM data collection; the feasibility of PROM collection in different patient groups (older patients, patients of non-white ethnicity) and the most effective way to collect PROMs i.e. paper, electronic formats or telephone recognition systems.
Members of the multidisciplinary team caring for this patient group will be asked to participate in focus group sessions to explore their views on the use and administration of PROM data.
Using topic guides to inform the interviews, qualitative data analysis will be applied to verbatim transcripts of individual interviews/focus groups to draw themes.
This project will contribute to the development and implementation of PROMs that could enhance QoL assessment and hence improve QoL for individual patients requiring haemodialysis as well as improving service delivery and overall patient care
