Research summary
Historically boys and young men with haemophilia have been advised against using a gym because of concerns about inducing bleeding. We know that with modern day treatment gym use is possible and is sought by these individuals who strive for the normality of their peers. Project GYM (Growing Young Men) will bring together haemophilia professionals (nurses and physiotherapists) and personal trainers (PTs) to develop a haemophilia fitness programme for young men with haemophilia, by means of both group and individual training sessions. The planned approach will apply ‘health activation’ techniques that have been developed, tried and tested in response to the growing problem of decreasing levels of physical activity and increasing obesity in the UK, to promote engagement and adherence with exercise programmes. It will be in line with recommendations in the UK’s National Institute for Health and Care Excellence Guidance on Physical Activity: Exercise Referral Schemes [NICE, 2014]. We hope that the project will also provide psychological support (peer to peer) for those young men who are socially or geographically isolated, by forming friendships with like minded individuals.
