Research summary
There is an urgent need for intervention early in the development of type 2 diabetes in order to prevent or mitigate the clinical manifestations of a disease that is approaching epidemic proportions. The term pre-diabetes is widely used to describe people identified as being glucose intolerant on the basis of glucose tolerance testing or HbA1c measurement. In predicting outcome, however, these tests have poor specificity. In the last 20 years, several studies have suggested that changes in β cell function may indicate a pre-diabetic situation and an association between elevated fasting proinsulin concentrations and subsequent progression to diabetes. This project will aim to establish if measurement of the concentration of proinsulin will provide a convenient and accurate means of identifying the pre-diabetic state in non-fasting samples, and also to establish the stability of proinsulin in whole blood samples over a period of up to 3 days
