Data collection arrangements
The ProGrES survey, run by NHS Blood and Transplant as a service evaluation project, started in March 2017 and collects anonymised, routinely collected data on patients receiving granulocyte transfusions.
Data is reported at baseline, at the completion of granulocyte transfusions, 28 days after the last transfusion, and at 6 months following the last transfusion.
Research programme
Granulocyte transfusions may be considered for transfusion to patients with infections that do not respond to normal treatments and who have deficiencies in their own white blood cells (neutrophils). The ProGrES survey, run by NHS Blood and Transplant as a service evaluation project, started in March 2017 and collects anonymised, routinely collected data on patients receiving granulocyte transfusions. The primary goal of the current project is to establish the service evaluation as a research database and produce descriptive analyses of the patient cohort. Further applications for specific projects will be made in due course. The research database will not be merged with any other dataset. This study will be conducted by investigators at NHS Blood and Transplant. The data within the database could be used to assign causality and potentially be used to confirm longstanding questions around the effectiveness of granulocyte transfusions. This would be transformative given the limited evidence from randomised trials to date, and the difficulties in conducting large randomised controlled trials in this setting.
