Research summary
Are there any microscopic features of cells in biopsies from patients that have been diagnosed with small cell lung cancer that can help to predict the prognosis of the disease?
This will be a retrospective study that will examine archived histological slides of biopsies from patients who have been diagnosed with small cell lung cancer at University Hospitals of North Midlands (UHNM). The aim is to determine if there is a relationship between the light microscopic morphology and staining patterns of the tumour cells and the clinical features and prognosis of the disease. This could provide useful information for diagnosis and future disease stratification. New reports or diagnoses will not be made and examination of slides anonymised.
Suitable cases will be found by conducting a search of the laboratory computer system and stored slides will be retrieved from the archive at UHNM histopathology department from the preceding three years, which will generate an estimated 150 cases.
All cases will be anonymised and will be reviewed by two researchers and scores given for staining patters and cellular features observed. These will be correlated with patient demographic data to determine if there are any associations.REC name
