Research summary
Cytomegalovirus (CMV) is thought to have a great impact on the immune system in terms of its cellular composition. CMV does not causes symptoms healthy people. In Early Arthritis the immune system becomes overactive and attacks the joints, causing arthritis. CMV-infected patients with arthritis have more severe disease. No systematic study has been completed to see what the additional effects of CMV infection are on the immune system of patients with Early Arthritis. We will take blood samples and analyse them in order to identify possible changes in the immune cells relating to CMV infection. This information could be used to separate patients with respect to course of disease (significant or minimal disability).
