Research summary
Most deaths following major surgery are caused by a cardiac event resulting from there being insufficient oxygen delivered by the blood to meet the heart's needs. Recently, it has become possible to non-invasively measure the ratio of oxygen supply and delivery in the heart in humans. However, the threshold ratio will vary by individual. This study aims to find the threshold ratio pre-operatively using a stress echocardiogram and observe whether crossing the threshold ratio intra-operatively is associated with cardiac damage after surgery.
