  • Research summary

People with severe mental illness (SMI) are frequently managed in primary care, and have a higher risk of problems linked to cardiovascular disease. The adapted PRIMROSE (PRIMROSE-A) intervention is a primary care intervention designed to address mental and physical health. People with SMI are supported to build behavioural strategies to prevent relapse and improve their cardiovascular health. The intervention includes up to eight 30-minute sessions with a practice nurse and four 60-minute sessions with a peer coach over 6 months. The aim of this study is to evaluate the PRIMROSE-A intervention and its implementation across three practices in the Kentish Town Central Primary Care Network. Individual interviews will be conducted with service users who receive PRIMROSE-A to understand their experiences of the intervention and how it was delivered. Interviews with provider members (including general practitioners, nurses, peer coaches, and managers) will explore their experiences of providing and implementing PRIMROSE-A. Interviews will be audio-recorded and transcribed to text documents word-for-word. Then they will be analysed by looking for patterns and anomalies in the text to identify themes that arise to explain and understand the experiences of participants. This study will support our understanding of the process of adopting PRIMROSE-A into practice and will inform decisions to adapt and roll-out the service in future.
