  • Data collection arrangements

MPH is one of the largest Orthopaedic centres in Europe, performing around 2,500 primary hip and knee replacements annually.

Orthopaedic data collected as routine within the NHS and PJS in MPH includes but is not limited to:
    - Pre-operative data, including patient demographics, such as age, gender, height, weight, side to be operated on, diagnosis etc., radiographs and outcomes scores.
    - Intra-operative data, including implant details, surgical measurements and surgical times.
    - Post-operative data, including radiographs, outcomes scores and post-operative complications up until 90 days after joint replacement.
    - Any data collected by arthroplasty care practitioners at the review clinics.

BOIS is a BHSCT approved database that stores data on patients who have had joint replacements at MPH. Patient radiographs relating to patients pre-2011 who have received hip and knee replacements within MPH are stored as hard-copies in a locked room in the PJS. Since 2011, all radiographs are digitised and stored on the NIPACS. MPH Direct is used to track all operative outcomes from patient discharge for the lifetime of the implant. The PJS uses NIECR to collect essential information on complications relating to their hip or knee replacement up until 90 days after surgery.

  • Research programme

To further improve the success of the surgery and patient outcomes, the PJS in MPH aims to set up methods of accessing and analysing all data that is collected as routine for hip and knee patients receiving their treatment at MPH. This stored information is substantial with over two decades of patient data (both hips and knees). Through this data monitoring and analysis; the overall outcomes, success and performance of the operation and specific implants can be closely monitored and reported. Whilst primarily an aid to the clinical management of joint replacement patients within MPH, using BOIS, MPH Direct, NIPACS, NIECR and the outcomes data from the PJS, to collectively analyse hip and knee replacements within MPH provides a unique and invaluable source of providing accurate, timely information on hip and knee replacements in the population of Northern Ireland for: research, audit, planning and education so that the patient experience and outcomes can be improved.
