Research summary
The purpose of this study is to develop an in-depth understanding of people’s experiences of and views about primary care provided by GP and other ‘non-specialist’ healthcare workers for children and young people with an eating disorder.
The project will use a combination of interviews and qualitative questionnaires to access the views and experiences of
(i) Children and young people (aged 12-25) with an eating disorder
(ii) Carers of children and young people (aged 12-25) with an eating disorderabout services provided in GP surgeries in relation to eating disorders, focusing in particular on
• Initial help seeking, identification of an ED problem and referral to specialist services
• On going care and monitoring in primary care
• Transitions between primary and specialist services
• Views about how support and services could be enhanced.Participants will be offered the option of a short (face to face or telephone) interview or completing an online qualitative questionnaire. Data will be analysed qualitatively to identify key themes and issues. Findings will be combined with findings from a parallel project exploring GP’s views and experiences of delivering care to children and young people with an eating disorder to provide us with an empirically-grounded, multi-perspectival knowledge base about current and ideal primary care provision for children and young people with an eating disorder in the BNSSG area that can be used to produce a set of recommendations to inform service development and commissioning in BNSSG.
