Research summary
Many children who come to the Paediatric Emergency Department (ED) are sent home without needing medical treatment or being admitted to the hospital. These children often have mild illnesses that could be treated by their family doctor (GP) or other community health services. We want to understand why parents bring these children to the hospital instead of other health services. To do this, we will interview parents whose children are redirected from the ED to the hospital’s on-site Urgent treatment Centre (UTC). We will ask them about their decision-making process and follow up with them to see how satisfied they were with being seen at the UTC, and whether they would make the same choice in the future. We will also gather information such as where they live to see if it is linked to their healthcare decisions.
In addition, we will conduct focus groups with staff (doctors, nurses, and healthcare assistants) to get their views on these cases. By better understanding the reasons behind parents' healthcare choices, we hope to provide more support to families who need it, reduce the demand on the ED, improve patient safety, increase parental satisfaction, and help the hospital meet national performance targets.REC name
