Research summary
We are carrying out research looking at ways we can better support people with early stage dementia in their home and in the community. The research is for people who have been diagnosed with early stage dementia and would like to maintain or increase their independence and participation in activities. We would like to find out what help people with dementia currently get to support independence and participation, and develop a programme that could be effective in addressing these issues.
The programme will provide information, advice and support on the maintenance of pleasure, independence, and relationships. We do not know whether a programme of this kind could work and need to do a large study to test it. Before doing a large study, we are carrying out a feasibility trial to find out the best way to carry out the research and check that there would be enough people interested in taking part.
People with mild dementia will be recruited from NHS sites providing dementia services. Participants will be allocated at random to one of two groups; one group will be offered the PRIDE programme in addition to usual care and one group will carry on with usual care as provided by their NHS Trust. Participants will complete assessments and questionnaires at the start of the study and again after 3 and 6 months. We will also invite some people to take part in focus group interviews about their experiences of the programme and the research.REC name
