Research summary
This study aims to identify whether children and young adults aged 3-18 years who have been treated for brain tumours, suffer from excessive day time sleepiness and/or disorders of sleep. This is important as the tumour or treatment for the tumour may interfere with the brainstem and hypothalamic sleep centres thus influencing sleep-wake cycles and control of sleep.
In order to investigate the prevalence of sleep disorders in this population, questionnaires will be handed to parents and children attending routine neuro-oncology clinic appointments. Those attending clinic between November 2015 and April 2016 will be asked to take part in the study with an estimated 80 potential participants. The questionnaires will include brief questions about patient demographics; data will be sourced from medical records to document tumour type and treatment received. Core sleep questionnaires will be administered including the child sleep habits questionnaire and Epworth sleepiness scale for children. The questionnaires will be analysed and compared to normative data.REC name
