Research summary
We would like to assess the prevalence of psychological difficulties in patients who attend complex breathlessness clinics. Such clinics determine the presence of upper airway respiratory conditions which includes Inducible Laryngeal Obstruction (ILO), formally known as Vocal Cord Dysfunction (VCD), breathing pattern disorder (BPD) and severe asthma. There is little known about ILO itself in the medical world, and even some general respiratory services, and therefore patients can attend multiple appointments in different services/departments over a period of years before the correct diagnosis is made. Therefore when patients attend they can feel overwhelmed and as though professionals do not believe their symptoms. Furthermore, clinical experience of working with patients with complex breathlessness frequently report mood difficulties due to the impact these conditions can have on their quality of life. It would therefore be helpful to understand the prevalence of anxiety and depression for patients coming through the Preston and Manchester Services by using the GAD7 (measure of anxiety) and PHQ9 (measure of depression) questionnaires.
