  • Research summary

This study will investigate the prevalence rates of common mental health disorders in a sample of foreign national prisoners (FNP-s) at HMP Wandsworth, as well as briefly evaluate the met and unmet mental healthcare needs as identified by this group.

It will assess the prevalence of common mental health disorders in a sample comprising of approximately equal numbers of foreign national prisoners and local prisoners in HMP Wandsworth over a 4 week period (with two researchers involved) through the administration of the Mini International Neuropsychiatric Interview (M.I.N.I) screening tool. The prevalence of common mental health disorders in the foreign national prisoners will be compared to that of the local prisoners’ population.

Other screening tools will also be administered to assess personality disorders, learning disability, autistic spectrum disorders and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder to identify potential co-morbidities. CANFOR assessment tool will be used to assess if the clinical needs of this group are met. The results from this study will help to plan how to meet the clinical needs of this group of prisoners.

Ethical approval being sought for this project includes NOMS approval (as research is being conducted at a site run by the Ministry of Justice); NHS REC opinion and NHS R&D approval is also being sought because NHS patients are being recruited from HMP Wandsworth in-reach team.

Data collection will be distributed to two student researchers; results will be used to write up an individual and unique dissertation based on the data.
