Research summary
Oesophageal (gullet) cancer has poor overal survival, partly because responses to chemotherapy are unusually incomplete. Why some parts of the cancer respond and others don't is not known. In a pilot series conducted at Imperial, we have shown distinct patterns of persistent cancer after the initial chemotherapy, which may offer some insights into why this happens. This may be a route to improving our current provision of treatment. In this study we want to build on this initial success, by pooling microscope images and clinical data from several hospitals which treat this type of cancer (with appropriate safeguards to protect confidentiality). This will allow us to prove these patterns are a real phenomena, and compare them to key clinical factors, like patient survival and type of treatment.
