Research summary
Many parents with premature babies in neonatal intensive care, who eagerly await the opportunity to be reunited with their babies in the family home, are often daunted when finally permitted to bring baby home. Parents, already overwhelmed, may not feel well enough prepared, equipped and supported to provide the complex care their baby needs and to adapt to family life with a premature baby after the neonatal intensive care environment. This project will review existing knowledge and resources made available to such parents. Importantly, it will engage with parents of premature babies, to harness their invaluable experience, to better understand the parent perspective and identify their specific information needs when preparing for discharge and upon bringing baby home. Informed by parents, relevant healthcare professionals and existing evidence obtained through research, this project will design, develop, pilot and evaluate new, targeted and easily accessible web resources that fulfil parent’s information needs. The web resources will be a mixture of written, audio and video content aimed at providing support and empowering parents to embrace and be prepared for caring for their baby at home.
