Research summary
Losing the ability to use your arm and hand after stroke is a devastating experience that can limit participation in everyday activities, reduce community integration and result in an overall reduced quality of life. Some recovery is possible and people with stroke can start to learn to use their arm and hand as a result of the NHS therapy they receive in the first three months. For many this early therapy practice does not translate into real world use with nearly half of people not using their affected arm and hand in their daily lives. Stroke survivors, therapists and researchers have all identified that the continuance of arm and hand practice, once statutory rehabilitation completes, is a clear gap in service provision.
The PREP programme, successfully delivered by NICHSA, provides an excellent opportunity to provide supported practice of arm and hand activity through integrating an evidence based upper limb programme within PREP. This study will investigate the feasibility of delivering, PREP Plus from the view of stroke survivors, caregivers and therapists delivering the intervention. We want stroke survivors to return to meaningful activity, like writing a card, having a cup of tea or playing bowls. We believe using this model provides an opportunity for this to become a reality for a large number of stroke survivors. A future large scale study across the whole of Northern Ireland could be easily conducted with all (11 sites) being involved.REC name
