  • Research summary

Premature Infant Nutrition Post Discharge Project

    Background:

The nutritional needs of premature infants are different to term infants. The neonatal units at Western Sussex Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust carefully manage the needs of these premature infants in hospital, and local and national guidelines support these. Less is known about the nutrition of these premature infants when they go home. Adequate and appropriate post discharge is important as it will guide future health growth, and development.

This project aims to discover more about post discharge neonatal nutrition in West Sussex.

    Project Aim:
To gain a better understanding of the nutrition and growth of preterm infants discharged from Western Sussex Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust in the first 18 months of life, living within the Coastal West Sussex Clinical Commissioning Group Area.

Families will be selected from discharge books on the neonatal units within Western Sussex Hospitals Foundation Trust, according to study inclusion/exclusion criteria.

The research is a cross sectional descriptive study comprising a parent/carer questionnaire which will evaluate parents/carers nutritional practices, specifically the use of vitamins, iron and milks (breast and formula) among premature infants post-hospital discharge.

The project aims to highlight any potential educational needs for parents, carers and local health professionals in primary and secondary care. It will aid general understanding of post discharge nutritional practices.

Parents will be given 2 months to return their questionnaires following dispatch.
