  • Research summary

Hospital emergency departments, sometimes more commonly known as Accident and Emergency (ā€˜A&E’) departments, aim to provide high quality care to all patients with emergency conditions. People aged 65 and over frequently attend A&E. Some people in this age group have more complex needs which mean they may require more resources when they attend A&E. They may also be at more risk of things going wrong. We know that people aged 65 and over may struggle to have their voice heard, compared to some other groups. It is important that we know that we are getting care right for people aged 65 and over, and can identify where improvement is needed where this not the case.

Patient Reported Experience Measures (PREMs) are patient surveys that are developed with input from patients, carers and professionals such as doctors and nurses. These surveys are designed to measure patient views of the care and treatment they receive. The results can help staff and hospitals where they need to improve the quality of care they provide. We have developed a new survey which aims to accurately identify what matters most to people aged 65 and over when they attend A&E.

This study aims to test the new survey among patients aged 65 and over. To do this, we will ask a sample of patients to complete the survey before they go home from A&E. The results will be analysed to help us understand how useful and accurate the survey is in the real world.

We hope that the final survey will be user-friendly and relevant for older people visiting the ED, and capable of detecting areas of strength and weaknesses in how we care for patients.
