Research summary
Older people aged over 65 years form a significant proportion of Emergency Department attendances. Despite this, little is known about the factors which influence older peoples’ perceptions ED care in the United Kingdom.
In order to ensure that the NHS provides patient-centred care, it is now recognised that patients should play a key role in defining what aspects of high quality care matter to them. Furthermore, patients should be empowered to report on whether they think healthcare organisations are meeting high quality standards.
Patient reported measures (PRMs) are questionnaires that are rigorously developed with patients, carers, professionals and other organisations, and are used to measure patients perceptions of healthcare and the effectiveness of treatment they receive. These questionnaires undergo scientific testing to ensure that they accurately measure the perceptions of the majority of patients they are targeting. The results from the PRM may useful as they give a broad (population level) impression of patients’ perspectives, and allow providers to identify strengths and vulnerabilities in services. This provides useful information to inform how services are designed and delivered and where improvement might be required.
This study aims to derive a comprehensive list of outcomes for older people attending the Emergency Department using qualitative methods (interviews and focus groups). This will form the basis of the outcomes set which will directly inform the contents of the PREM-ED 65+ patient reported outcome measure.
Following generation of the CLO, a separate Delphi study and stakeholder meeting is planned to further rationalise and prioritise items into a core outcome set (COS). The COS will then be used to directly inform the contents of PREM-ED 65+, which will be formally validated for use amongst patients aged 65 and above attending the ED.
