Research summary
Yorkshire has more cases of lung cancer diagnosed in a year per population than anywhere else in the United Kingdom. \n\nRecent advances in radiotherapy have resulted in an increased number of patents that can be cured of lung cancer. Many lung cancer patients are elderly and have other health issues at the time of their lung cancer diagnosis. Increasingly patients are surviving their lung cancer but die due to other existing diseases. \n\nTo maximise the benefits of modern radiotherapy there is an urgent need to optimise the patient’s health before, during and after radiotherapy to allow for the improvements in radiotherapy to be translated into improved survival and quality of life.\n\nThe PREHABS study will provide education and support mechanisms (smoking cessation, increased physical activity and dietary advice) for patients undergoing lung radiotherapy. \n\nBy increasing the mental and physical fitness of lung cancer patients and providing support for stopping smoking, we envisage an improvement in the wellbeing and potentially survival of these patients. \n
