Research summary
The study will look into the communication and information needs of female childhood/adolescent/young adult (CAYA) cancer survivors regarding their potential long-term pregnancy risks. The study will use results from previous research, which found there may be a higher risk of miscarriage, stillbirth and pre-mature labour for female childhood cancer survivors.
The study aims to find out what currently happens in the UK with regards to talking about future long-term health risks with CAYA cancer survivors, with an in-depth review of published evidence, an online survey and more focused interviews (PICCS study).
PICCS 2 will then aim to use a professional agreement tool to ask a selection of female survivors parents and health care professionals, questions about when might be the most appropriate time to be told about any future risks for pregnancy, who is best placed to communicate this information and what survivors would want to be told. The information collected will be then used to develop a best practice guidance document for health care professionals, to make sure that female survivors and their families are given the information they need to make safe and informed choices when considering pregnancy based on their previous treatment history.
