  • Research summary

The purpose of this study is to discover the preferences and discrimination abilities of the individuals living with dementia and individuals living with IDD and dementia who are taking part. Previous research has found that leisure items tend to displace edible items during preference assessments for people with dementia, but for people with IDD this is the opposite (edible items are preferred over leisure items). This research aims to replace previous work with individuals with dementia and expand the preference assessment to individuals with both IDD and dementia. Further to this, we aim to investigate stimulus control in individuals with IDD and dementia and individuals with dementia to see if there is an impairment in discrimination abilities and if either simultaneous or successive presentations facilitate the development of stimulus discrimination. This can inform future work with preference assessments, functional analyses and clinical practice with people with IDD living with dementia
