Research summary
Research Question:
What are the early factors (e.g. weight loss history, motivation, and social support) associated with successful weight loss in behavioural weight management programmes? Why?
Obesity is a growing public health problem in Scotland, with approximately 1/4 of adults living with obesity. Excess body weight is associated with a range of health problems. Behavioural weight management programmes have been shown to be effective at supporting people to lose weight. Despite the success of these programmes, many participants fail to reach this weight loss. Understanding what influences success early in behavioural weight management programmes would allow for additional supports to be put in place for those who may struggle to succeed. What?
The study is looking at which factors (e.g. personal characteristics, behaviours and social) influence successful weight loss in behavioural weight management programmes. To understand success in behavioural weight management programmes, patients will be recruited from NHS Greater Glasgow & Clyde (GGC), which uses weight watchers for this service.
Who?
Anyone who is eligible and starting weight watchers in NHS GGC.Where & How?
This will be explored via questionnaire (online) and one-to-one interview (face-to-face, over the phone or skype). Participants will be sent information about the study with their appointment letter for weight watchers, where they can opt in to take part by following a URL or contacting the researchers. Questionnaires will be completed within 1 week of starting the programme. Interviews will take place approximately 4 weeks into the programme. As part of usual care, participants are given 12 sessions of weight watchers from the NHS weight management services. This can be taken over a period of 16 weeks to allow for illness or annual leave. Weekly weight outcomes for participants will be collected via the NHS SafeHaven. This will be all the weights taken during the 12 sessions provided to the participants from NHS weight management servicesREC name
