Research summary
There are many factors that can affect the outcome of orthodontic treatment. The purpose of this study is to try to find out which factors have the most influence on how long patients have to wear braces for and the final position of the teeth after treatment. Whether a statistical model into which these factors can be entered could be used to predict treatment outcome will also be tested. The results of this study should help the clinician to be able to predict more accurately the outcome of orthodontic treatment before treatment begins.
A previous study has already identified factors that may affect treatment outcomes of fixed appliance therapy in the adolescent patient. These factors will be combined to create a statistical model. The validity of these factors will be tested by reviewing the clinical notes of patients who are attending Bristol Dental Hospital or the Royal United Hospital Bath to have their braces removed at the end of their treatment. Following patient consent, the clinical notes and study models will be reviewed and the treatment outcomes recorded.Data will be recorded anonymously into a computer system which is password protected and will not be disclosed to anyone. The relationship between the possible factors and treatment outcomes will be determined to see if the statistical model can predict outcomes.
