Data collection arrangements
The population of interest for this study is patients with chronic liver disease (cirrhosis), admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU) for supportive care.
The types of data to be stored includes: age, sex, co-morbidities, medications and/or procedures, date and duration of hospital and ICU admission, and clinical outcome (alive/dead) from the admission episode as well as up to 5 years after the admission. Additionally, physiological and laboratory parameters will be collected, including: blood pressure, oxygen levels, degree of organ support (e.g. mechanical ventilation, dialysis), and results of routine blood tests.
The data will be collected by either a member of the direct clinical care team, or a member of the research team, and entered onto a database to be stored on a password-protected NHS Trust computer in a locked office on the hospital site. Linked anonymised data will be used for data analysis.
Research programme
Patients with chronic liver disease (cirrhosis) typically have a poor outcome once they have multi-organ failure and require intensive care (ICU). New ways to assess prognosis will help define which patients would benefit most from ICU, and also help identify patients most likely to benefit from new treatments that are in development. Another example is liver transplantation – we don’t currently routinely transplant these ICU patients, but a pilot programme is starting in the UK. These data will help identify the critically ill patients most likely to benefit from transplantation.
