Research summary
Delirium is an acute confusional state that occurs in up to half of patients over the age of 65 who have undergone an operation. It is associated with an increased risk of death, longer hospital stays and long-term decline in cognitive function. Predicting which patients will develop delirium is very difficult but in surgical patients it may be related to the effect of anaesthetic drugs and inflammatory processes within the brain. We therefore propose to use brain monitoring to quantify the effect of anaesthetic drugs on the brain and to measure blood markers of inflammation to predict postoperative delirium.
