  • Research summary

The purpose of this project is to study the complications of cirrhosis, and to allow the researchers to be able to identify (or predict) factors that may increase the risk of developing a condition known as acute on chronic liver failure (ACLF). ACLF is a sharp deterioration of liver function in patients with cirrhosis, which is usually associated with a precipitating event and results in the failure of one or more organs (such as kidneys) and usually requires support in a high dependency setting.
The PREDICT Study is therefore designed to prospectively observe patients with Acute Decompensation (AD) who are at risk of developing ACLF and to discover clinical, laboratory and patho-physiological (using prospective ancillary studies) predictors and mechanisms involved in the development and clinical course of ACLF. Understanding these factors might help to prospectively treat ACLF patients in the future.
