  • Research summary

People with dementia often experience problems with toileting and bladder or bowel leakage that can blight their lives. Treatment to reduce leakage is important, but does not always work and continence products that successfully contain any leakage are fundamental to dignity, health and well-being. A wide range of products are available, all with different advantages and disadvantages for different people. Choosing the right continence products is complicated, based on many things, e.g. mobility, incontinence type and if carer support is needed. Using the wrong products can harm the user and increase carer workloads.

To help people with dementia who live at home (and their carers) to choose the best products for them, the work in this study will do two key things. Firstly, interviews with people with dementia and incontinence, their carers and healthcare professionals, plus 7 day product diaries with people with dementia and their carers will be used to gain a better understanding of continence product related problems and strategies. Secondly, a continence product decision aid designed specifically to support people with dementia will be developed (paper and on-line versions). This decision aid will be evaluated by people with dementia, their carers and healthcare professionals using a questionnaire to collect feedback.
