Research summary
This study will investigate the effect of six weeks supplementation with a prebiotic galactooligosaccharide food supplement on markers of gastrointestinal immune activation and inflammation in the blood, stool and urine. The prebiotic food supplement will be given daily alongside standard therapy in moderate gastrointestinal inflammation as seen in mildly active ulcerative colitis. This will be a broad spectrum exploratory study which will inform the direction of future research into the complementary therapy of prebiotic food substances in conditions with increased overt and subclinical inflammation such as inflammatory bowel disease, obesity, diabetes, irritable bowel syndrome and in aging.
