Research summary
This study aims to assess the feasibility, acceptability and safety of a 3 week pre-surgical exercise intervention for people surgically treated for lung cancer. It further aims to explore changes in secondary outcomes including; breathlessness, fatigue, quality of life (QOL), functional performance (steps per day), pulmonary function, self-efficacy, barriers and benefits, and exercise capacity, and record post-operative complications and length of hospital stay. This study is part of a PhD project developed to design and test an exercise intervention for this population. The data from phase 1 (literature review and qualitative study) informed the development of the intervention to be assessed in this study (phase 2). This study will adopt a mixed methods design.
Participants will be recruited by health professionals from two NHS sites (Tayside and Lanarkshire) over a six month period. Potential participants will be approached and asked if they would like to participate in a pre-surgical exercise intervention consisting of; a consultation where educational material is discussed and provided, a walking programme is advised, and participants are referred to the exercise component of pulmonary rehabilitation sessions twice per week. Study endpoints will be examined and acceptability will be measured both objectively and subjectively by individual interviews with participants and health professionals involved in the study. This is a single group study - there will be no control group.
