  • Research summary

The Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) have designed new standards for proficiency and Standards for Student Supervision and Assessment (SSSA) (NMC, 2018, NMC, 2018a; NMC, 2018b; NMC 2018c), which were published in 2019. The new standards of proficiency and SSSA, have significantly altered the facilitation of supervision and assessment of student, which includes the omission of mentor and sign of mentors, in favour of a supervisor, practice assessor and academic assessor roles (NMC,2018; NMC2018a, NMC, 2018b, NMC, 2018c). It is currently not known how this will impact on registrants in clinical practice.

Presently, those responsible for supervision met programme needs through the 'theoretical standard' for mentorship, otherwise known as the Supporting Learning and Assessment in Practice (SLAiP) course (NMC,2008; Royal College of Nursing (RCN), 2015). However, the realignment of skills and proficiency for newly qualified nurses, due to the implementation of the New Standards of Proficiency and SSSA (NMC 2018; NMC 2018a; NMC 2018b; NMC, 2018c), means that these newly qualified nurses will have competencies, that supersede those who will be supervising and mentoring them in practice.

This has the potential to shape the lived experiences of those who are responsible for supervising and assessing students whilst on placement. It therefore places an urgent need to investigate the ways in which these new Standards may influence and inform the training of the future nursing workforce.
